Toby Keith On Politics: I Don’t Have To Be Told What To Think

Outspoken country superstar Toby Keith paid a visit to ABC's The View recently to celebrate the release of The Bus Songs, a new album showcasing "crazy back-of-the-bus songs" he's compiled over the last 15 years. "These aren't for everybody and they're gonna hurt a little at first," he admitted to laughter. The native Oklahoman also talked politics.

Toby famously played at an inaugural concert event for Donald Trump earlier this year and was asked why by The View's Joy Behar. "The White House has asked me to come do stuff ... and I've said yes to all three [of the last presidents]," he explained.

"So it's just for America?" Behar asked.

"Yeah," Toby said, garnering applause.

The View's Paula Faris followed up by recalling the controversy surrounding Toby's controversial 2002 hit "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue," which some early critics denounced as angry. "At the time I believe you were a registered Democrat," Feris noted. "And people were surprised by that."

"I'm an Independent, but I think I'm the only [one] in my family tree that hadn't been Democrat," Toby offered. "But I was catching so much flack on both sides that I just said 'I'm neither of you guys. I know the difference between right and wrong.' Everything is so right/left, and I see things right/wrong [in] my own way that I don't have to be told what I think."
