Maren Morris: Being A Woman In Music Is A “Catch 22”

Maren Morris is one of the most successful new artists in country music.

She's been a regular at and near the top of the charts since her 2016 debut and in November was named New Artist of the year by the CMA. That doesn't come without drawbacks, however. Maren addressed some of them in a new interview with Glamour.

"It's kind of a catch-22 because I enjoy being a woman," Maren said when asked how she dealt with media interviews where the focus was on her looks, something she addressed a few weeks ago in an open letter published by Lenny. "I love everything about being a woman, for the most part. And I love beauty – I grew up in a hair salon. I love doing my own makeup on tour and talking about it with my fans. But when I've released an album that went number one and have a Grammy under my belt, and the first thing the interviewer talks about is my short haircut, I feel disassociated because I have accomplished a lot of really crazy things in the last year."

Maren also shed light on how she views her role with with female up-and-comers in music. "I'm hoping that what I'm creating is not just the music, but this projection of strength," she told Glamour. "I'm not always strong, but I think what my fans have realized is that there's strength in vulnerability. They don't have to be ashamed of feeling sad, and [we can talk] about really human things people my age are going through, like dating and how shitty it is, being the aggressor as the woman and not just chasing the guy down or looking pretty for him. Those are really basic human qualities that no one in a long time has said plainly in a song in country music."
